The Kept Desk - household money-saving systems

Independent publication

Keep more of the money you already earn

The Kept Desk is an independent publication about household money-saving systems: the audits, routines, lists and automations that stop money leaking out of a home month after month. No deal of the day, no coupon chase, no hype. Systems you set up once, that keep working while you get on with your life.

Start with how a household money system works, or pick a system below. Every guide opens with a system card: the system it builds, the cost it cuts, the effort involved and the first step.

How the desk runs

See it
Every cost gets listed before it gets cut. You cannot fix a charge you have never seen written down.
System it
Turn the fix into a routine, a list, a calendar entry or an automatic transfer - something that repeats without willpower.
Cut once
Make the change a single time: the call, the form, the switch, the list on the fridge.
Keep it
Redirect what you stopped paying into a fund or a goal the same week, before it dissolves into general spending.
Review
Once or twice a year, walk the systems again. Prices creep, households change, systems get re-tuned.

Walk the systems

System 01 - Foundations system Saving foundations and the household money system Start here: how a household money system works, the one number that tells you it is working, and the small set of habits everything else on this site hangs from. (12 guides) System 02 - Audit system Subscription audits The full sweep: find every recurring charge, write down what each one really costs, and decide keep, cut or downgrade with a clear head. (12 guides) System 03 - Category system Subscriptions by category Streaming, apps, memberships, software, boxes and plans: what each category of subscription should be doing for your household, and the ones that quietly stop earning their place. (12 guides) System 04 - Heating and power system Energy bills Heating, hot water, cooling and the appliances in between: read your bill properly, then work the levers in the order they matter. (12 guides) System 05 - Services system Broadband, mobile and home service bills Speeds, data allowances, bundles and renewal windows: pay for the service your household actually uses, not the tier you were sold. (12 guides) System 06 - Renewal system Insurance renewal literacy Renewals are literacy, not advice: read the notice, compare like for like, understand deductibles and coverage, and never let a policy renew itself unnoticed. (12 guides) System 07 - Grocery system Grocery shopping systems Meal plans that happen, lists that run the shop, store layouts, bulk buying and the freezer: a grocery bill is a system problem, not a willpower problem. (12 guides) System 08 - Running costs system Household running costs The quiet budget: cleaning, laundry, water, pets, maintenance and the small consumables that leak money a few dollars at a time. (12 guides) System 09 - Transport system Transport costs Fuel, maintenance, passes, parking and the true cost per mile: spending less on getting around without giving up the car or the trips. (12 guides) System 10 - Family system Kids and family costs School costs, clothes, activities, parties and days out: family spending with a framework, so control does not mean saying no to everything. (12 guides) System 11 - Seasonal system Seasonal and annual costs The costs that arrive once a year and ambush the monthly budget: holidays, back to school, winter, summer and the annual renewals month. (12 guides) System 12 - Buying literacy system Buying literacy Unit prices, price cycles, cost per use and sales theatre: how to read a price calmly and decide like someone who is not being hurried. (12 guides) System 13 - Big purchase system Big purchases Appliances, furniture and electronics: total cost of ownership, repair or replace, warranties read properly, and the extras nobody quotes. (12 guides) System 14 - Automation system Savings automation Money that moves itself on payday: transfers, splits, round-ups and automated bills set up once, so saving does not depend on remembering. (12 guides) System 15 - Sinking fund system Sinking funds and savings goals Known future costs, funded monthly in advance: car repairs, home repairs, holidays, gifts and the annual bills that are only a surprise once. (12 guides) System 16 - Challenge system Savings challenges and money routines Challenges that teach something and routines that outlast them: the pantry challenge, the ten-minute money check, use-it-up months and selling one thing a week. (12 guides) System 17 - Waste system Avoiding waste Food in the bin, returns never made, duplicates in the cupboard and guarantees never claimed: the money your household already spent, recovered. (12 guides) System 18 - Repair system Second-hand and repair Buy it used, mend it first, keep it alive longer: what to buy second-hand, what to check, and the repair-or-replace question in the right order. (12 guides) System 19 - Digital hygiene system Digital spending hygiene Trials, taps and renewal traps: free-trial reminders, auto-renew sweeps, in-app purchases and the stored cards that make spending invisible. (12 guides) System 20 - Calendar system The annual money calendar The whole year on one page: the once-a-year review, the monthly money jobs, the records worth keeping, and the check that proves the system worked. How this desk works

A grocery shop with a handwritten list, a basket of vegetables and a phone showing a simple list

Three rules. First, evergreen systems only: this site never publishes a deal, a code or a price drop, because deals expire and a guide built on one rots. Where a price or rate is mentioned, it is a dated fact from a published source, or a round number inside a worked example labelled as a hypothetical. Second, education only: the desk explains how bills, contracts and household systems work, and never tells any household what it should do with its own money. Third, corrections are published, not buried: the corrections page records what changed and why. The desk's position throughout: households rarely have an income problem they can solve this month, but most have a leakage problem a system can solve this week.
